Oral cancer which is most often squamous cell carcinoma includes cancer of the lips, tongue, inner lining of the cheek, gums, floor of the mouth and hard and soft palate. Oral cancer is largely caused by cigarette smoking, smokeless tobacco, viruses and other environmental factors.
Oral Cancer has a high incidence in the North East region. Treatment of oral cancers is ideally a multidisciplinary approach involving the efforts of surgeon, radiation oncologists, Medical oncologists, dental practitioners, nutritionists, and rehabilitation and restorative specialists. Surgical removal is frequently the recommended treatment, often with combined removal of the lymph nodes followed by appropriate reconstruction.
